Mount Pawtuckaway - North Peak

Mount Pawtuckaway - North Peak Professional Review and Guide

"An interesting boulder field, good wildlife habitat, and excellent views on one of the best hikes in southeastern New Hampshire. At a little more than 1,000 feet tall, Mount Pawtuckaway would receive little notice if it were in a place like the White Mountains, but in the relatively flat lands of southeastern New Hampshire, it stands tall above the surrounding woods and farms. There are actually three separate peaks on Pawtuckaway—North, Middle, and South—all the remnants of one of the last volcanic, mountain-building periods in New Hampshire, which took place around 130 million years ago.

This trip visits the North Peak, which is the tallest of the three and features excellent views from several open ledges. The hike also passes Round Pond, a couple of beaver ponds, and a unique boulder field that is popular with rock climbers. Part of Pawtuckaway State Park, Mount Pawtuckaway is near several other hikes, as well as good mountain biking, paddling, and camping."

This was an okay trail. I think we parked at the wrong site, then spent most of our time walking on a dirt road rather than in the woods. The boulders were neat, but I think the description of this trail out-did the reality of it.

Great hike, beautiful mix of pond, forest and summit! The blaze is aweful however, so be sure to bring the trail description with you or you will surely get lost. Also, the dirt road to the trail head is at 167 Nottingham rd. Overall, the trip was beautiful, but it could use a little TLC.

The trails were very confusing, and not marked properly.

The ascent to the peak "behind the communications tower" is a bit confusing - not clear where trail leads - looks carefully around and don't descent - this will take you off the trail.

Good trail. Great views. Definitely not over traveled... in fact apart from people bouldering on the many large granite rocks at the beginning of the hike you probably won't see anyone. Trails can get confusing so pay attention.

I had a great time on this trail. Now, until I started up the North Mountain Loop, i kept running into families, which i wasn't too happy about. But after starting up the trail, i did not see one person until i had come back down and looped back around the mountain. It was 2.5 hours of solitude out of a 3.5 hour trip. Climbing up and down were fairly difficult, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
