Hedgehog Mountain Trail

Hedgehog Mountain Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Within walking distance of one national forest campground and near two others, the Hedgehog Mountain loop is a pleasant half-day hike in the heart of the White Mountains.

Primarily along moderate terrain, the route traverses changing forests before arriving at countless open ledges. Hedgehog Mountain is a perfect introductory hike to the region’s wildlife, plants, and geology, and reminds us all that beautiful views can exist well below tree line."

"This is a pleasant family hike on a modest mountain with multiple views from various ledges. Hedgehog Mountain is a minor peak in White Mountain National Forest just north of Mounts Whiteface and Passaconaway and just outside the boundary of the Sandwich Range Wilderness. It’s a wonderful hike with many ledges and rock outcroppings from which to take in a view. If you don’t have the time or the stamina to commit to one of the 4,000-footers, Hedgehog Mountain is the perfect alternative. Begin at the trailhead at the end of the large hiker parking lot across from the Passaconaway Campground. About 50 yards from the trailhead, you come to a junction with the Downes Brook Trail. Turn left (south) on the UNH Trail (blue diamond markers). The path is on an old railroad bed, wide and flat through the tall pines."

Fairly easy out and back hike with multiple view points. The day we hiked was drizzly which made the trail fairly muddy and slippery. Definitely need hiking sticks/poles for this trip. Would recommend going up the side that summits Hedgehog mountain first. The other way seemed much steeper. The trail also has many roots over the trails so watch your footing. But I would recommend this trail for anyone looking to get some great views of the White Mountains not found from the streets.

Great hike, go clockwise. Starts off and ends easy, moderate for most of the mid hike around ledges. Awesome views!! There is a small moment within the 1st 1/2 mile where the trail runs along a little brook where you actually wonder if you arent on the trail, but it is blazed.

After several years of hiking the UNH trail in the fall, we have found Hedgehog Mountain to be consistantly beautiful. Be sure to take time at each ledge to take in the views.
