It’s a fine ride in an historic part of New Hampshire: good exercise and classic New England scenery. It’s hard to imagine this as a dangerous frontier, but in the mid-eighteenth century, Charlestown was the northernmost colonial settlement in the Connecticut River Valley. Before it became “Charlestown,” the settlement was simply known as “Fort 4.” What you see at the fort today is a reconstruction and living history museum, well worth a visit before or after the ride. The fort sets the stage for the ride: Like the pattern of colonial settlement, the route makes its way inland and upstream, following tributaries of the Connecticut.
