"If you have more time to spend exploring William B. Umstead State Park with the dogs than the short, 20-minute trip around the Inspiration Trail the Company Mill Trail is a good choice. Starting at the same trailhead as the Inspiration Trail, this loop extends nearly 6 miles and takes at least three leisurely hours to complete as it winds through deep woods and crosses scenic creeks, to every dog’s delight. Bicycles and horses are prohibited on the park’s hiking trails, making the trails safer for hiking with dogs."

"This circuit hike leaves a busy trailhead then drops to a breached mill and scenic locale on Crabtree Creek. Beyond this popular spot the trek climbs a ridge then drops to visit Sycamore Creek before eventually returning to travel alongside Crabtree Creek again. The ample hills, alluring creeks, and tributary drainages all draped in woods keep beauty on the front burner the entire hike. The Company Mill Trail starts at the Reedy Creek entrance to William B. Umstead State Park, conveniently located off I-40. Being an attention-grabbing trail with a combination of aquatic and upland habitats, as well as having local historical significance, makes it a popular trail. However, many of the hikers who start the Company Mill Trail hike only the mile to the former Company Mill site on Crabtree Creek, and enjoy their time at this breached dam, rapids, pool, and rocks, rather than doing the entire circuit hike."

This is more like a 6.1 - 6.2 mile route (used my GPS on this and stayed on the route). Nice pass by the river on a few areas of the trail, not much other scenery but good for working some uphill areas and improving your stamina if you are starting out and can do a moderate pace. My first hike on this trail and kept a pace between 3.4 and 4.2 mph even with a couple of stops. Finished in just under two hours.
