Middle Prong Circuit

Middle Prong Circuit Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This challenging high country loop hike leaves the Blue Ridge Parkway, traipsing through highland evergreens of spruce and Fraser fir to enter the Middle Prong Wilderness. Dive past a cascading waterfall to find Middle Prong, a mountain rill exuding highland beauty of the first order. Climb along Middle Prong back to a lofty spruce-fir forest, closing the circuit.

Set in a ridge-rimmed bowl formed by the Blue Ridge and Fork Ridge, the Middle Prong West Fork Pigeon River drains mile-high springs flowing north from the Blue Ridge. Today’s visitors would never know by the resplendent forests rising
high that the Middle Prong Valley was logged a century back. However, keen eyes may spot relics of that time such as metal cables, lumps of coal from logging trains, and unidentifiable metal machine parts."
