Big Laurel Creek Hike

Big Laurel Creek Hike Professional Review and Guide

"This there-and-back trek traces an old railroad grade along Big Laurel Creek. Here, you follow the stream as it cuts a rugged gorge filled with geological wonders from steep cliffs to rock-constricted rapids below which deep pools form, to sun-splashed outcrops availing good watery views. The gentle grade reaches the former community of Runion, replete with relics, then cuts still deeper to reach the French Broad River and a turnaround point.

This hike explores the lowermost gorge of Big Laurel Creek, a scenic stream carving a canyon on its way to meet its mother stream, the French Broad River. Along the way you will see rock outcrops, crashing rapids, and deep pools, all while tracing a relatively gentle trail that contrasts with the rugged terrain through which it travels."
