Three Top Mountain Trail

Three Top Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Three Top Trail here begins at the end of the wildlife access road. Initially, it utilizes an old roadbed that circumnavigates the mountain, passing through an excellent stand of bigtooth aspen, recognizable by its smooth, shiny, brown bark and distinctive spade-shaped leaves that go golden in autumn.

Then, the trail climbs, not gracefully at times. Also, be on the lookout for two or three false trails; a quick examination of the options makes it clear which is the dominant, and thus, correct, trail."

Great trail. Follows old logging road and gets steep and narrow and eroded in places. In deciduous canopy until summit, where there are magnificent 360 degree views of Ashe and Watauga Counties, and into Tennessee and Virginia. The view from the top is the reward for this hike.
