Yellow Creek

Yellow Creek Professional Review and Guide

"It's hard to think of the Yellow Creek ride without getting obsessed by the hill climb up to Yellow Greek Gap. It's very, very steep and can turn even the strongest set of legs into jello. The funny thing is, it's only a small portion of the route, yet it seems to linger in your thoughts and come up in conversation the entire time. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful ride. You'll follow the road high above Lake Fontana and then along the western edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, right beside Lake Cheoah. Many waterfalls cascade out of the Park, right beside Lake Cheoah. Many waterfalls cascade out of the Park and into the lake.

The second half of the ride follows the Cheoah River and Yellow Creek itself. The big climb is almost at the end. Look for a dazzling display of wildflowers in spring. Points of interest: Fontana Dam (highest in the East)- you'll ride right past the base of it and you can take a short side trip to the top; Great Smoky Mountains National Park; Cheoah Dam (a scene from "The Fugitive" was filmed here); water diversion projects; a lot of neat barns; trout farm; cross Appalachian Trail twice."
