Uwharrie National Forest: Uwharrie Recreation Trail South Professional Review and Guide
"The Uwharrie Recreation Trail is a 20-mile National Recreation Trail that weaves its way north to south through the Uwharrie National Forest. It is the perfect trail to explore on a weekend backpacking trip. However, if you dont have two full days to hike, consider exploring this short out-and-back route at the southern terminus of the trail.
The hike starts near the intersection of NC 24/27 and River Road, but after 0.25 mile of hiking, you will leave the roar of the highway behind you. The trail then surrounds you with a thicket of green mountain laurel trees and travels beside the gurgling Wood Run Creek. Eventually the path crosses over the creek and travels steadily uphill to explore the nearby ridge and surrounding mountains of Uwharrie National Forest. After gaining substantial elevation, the suggested day route departs the national recreation trail and follows a short spur to a lovely picnic spot at Wood Run Camp. Enjoy a rest at the sunny clearing before retracing your steps back to the trailhead."
