Black Mountain Professional Reviews and Guides

"Simply put, this is one of the top three descents in the entire forest. It should be on the “A” list for any rider who requires enormous doses of heartbreak, challenge, and adrenaline.

Make no bones about it: This descent is rough and treacherous, filled with high water bars and hungry rocks. Never mind what any of the signs or maps say: This is an advanced trail for advanced riders. I can’t recall a more pounding descent. Tread: 9.5 miles of rough-and-ready Pisgah singletrack; 0.4 mile of gravel Forest Service road."

The Ride: Black Mountain --- Buckhorn and back .. total time 3.5 hours I Started at the parking on the right just before the Rangers Station, I started my ride at exactly 9.am, from the car park I followed a gravel path for about 2 min. then the Black Mountain Trail veered off to the left heading uphill, the start was well marked. The trail climbed on a wide single track, but was nothing serious, and was fairly easy going. Followed the track around and crossed a log bridge over an empty ditch, and continued climbing at an easy pace. After about 15 min. the trail took a left ( Straight on was the Thrift cove Trail) Now the trail started getting steeper, and my gears went to the lowest, but it was still not too bad. My biggest problem I had with the climb was that i was not getting enough traction because of the slippery ground. The climb to Black Mountain took me just under 2 hours. The downhill is pretty mental, and there is no room for errors, it is an extremely bumpy downhill. For more info visit : www.mountainbikemayhem.com

steady climb on forestry roads followed by one of the sickest downhill sections of single track in the area. Highly Recommend!!!!

This is a convenient, fast access trail ride for me. It starts on Hwy 276 from a parking area on the right just as you pass the entrance to Davidson River Campground. It is a good climb up thrift cove and then a fast technical Black Mountain downhill to the finish. If you take a left onto Black Mountain trail and ride it "backwards", it''s a technical climb uphill and then a superb downhill descent on Thrift Cove. It is fast and fun. The whole ride can easily be done in 45 minutes to an hour with sight seeing included. Enjoy!
