The ultimate route along Cheoah Bald's flanks is the Cheoah Bald Trail, a 6.5-mile one way (13 miles total) lightly graveled service road. Saddle up in the knowledge that the total gain will be over 2,000 feet in 6 miles. A hike of at least a half mile one way is necessary in order to gain Cheoah's summit. The rocky cliffs and steep forests surrounding the road are home to tough and adaptable creatures. Deer and turkeys fatten on the abundant mast from oaks. The biker with an observant eye may be able to pick out the owls roosting on hemlock boughs, and spotting a ruffed grouse is likely. They're normally seen only after they've been spooked, wings whistling, flying off like a missile.
