Soco Creek heads up into Soco Gap (elevation 4,345 feet), where the Blue Ridge Parkway crosses US 19 east of Cherokee at the Qualla Reservation line. It flows to its confluence with the Oconaluftee River just below the takeout. It presents the skilled paddler with a real roller-coaster ride. Although it never strays more than a few yards from US 19 and runs through many backyards, one has little opportunity to view the scenery—good or bad. Soco is wholly within the reservation and has been designated as “Enterprise Waters.” As of press time, the Cherokee Indian Reservation has banned all boating on waters passing through its land. This may change in the future.
