"The highlight of Merchants Millpond State Park is the 760-acre shallow millpond, which has large bald cypress and tupelo gum trees draped with Spanish moss. Beyond the main millpond, Lassiter Swamp is the home of old-growth cypress. The trails wind through mixed pine and hardwood forests surrounding the pond.

At least 210 bird species have been identified in Merchants Millpond State Park. Habitats: Black-water coastal millpond, swamp forest, mixed pine-hardwood forest. Key birds: Summer: Eastern Kingbird; Great Crested Flycatcher; Prothonotary Warbler; Blue Grosbeak; Summer Tanager. Winter: Hooded Merganser. Year-round: Brown-headed Nuthatch."
