Old Fort - Hickory Nut Gorge

Old Fort - Hickory Nut Gorge Professional Review and Guide

"If you want a really gorgeous ride with lots and lots of climbing, one that's very strenuous and lasts all day, this is it! You'll travel through the Hickory Nut Gorge near the town of Bat Cave and under the eaves of Chimney Rock. Lake Lure is not too far away. After the Gorge, it's about twenty miles to Old Fort. A gated road (no motor traffic) takes you back up the Blue Ridge escarpment and into the town of Black Mountain.

The climbing and descending is not over yet. You'll climb to Lackey Gap and then down and up several more times before finally completing the loop. If it sounds difficult, it is. It can also be a lot of fun. Points of interest: Side trip to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure- if you have the energy; several antique shops and unique stores in Black Mountain; native crafts in Bat Cave; Black Mountain Bicycles- one mile off route in Black Mountain."
