The Green River has its origins southwest of Tuxedo where it runs quietly for several miles before its inundation at Lake Summit. The Saluda Mountains are the southern border of this upper section. Below the dam at Lake Summit, the river drops through a short gorge, flattens for a few miles, and then enters the Narrows, a worldclass stretch of whitewater. Downstream of the Narrows, it levels out into a delightful fast-flowing stream cutting between Cove and Chimney Top Mountains to the south and McCraw Mountain to the north. Through this area, it is a fairly small stream dropping over easy ledges and flowing through mild rock gardens.
