Historic Salisbury Ramble

Historic Salisbury Ramble Professional Review and Guide

"The Historic Salisbury Ramble is an easy, leisurely 11.6-mile ride, designed to introduce you to the historic district in Salisbury and lead you to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer.

The first part of the route involves short distances and quick turns past numerous notable residences in the historic district. At Mile 1.9 the route straightens out on the way to the museum. From there a few turns lead you out into the country for a brief respite before Bringle Ferry Road brings you back into the heart of Salisbury’s downtown."

Salisbury is a cute town and the Transportation Museum provided a fun and interesting break. However, this ride has some difficulties that garner it a lower rating. The first two miles or so of the ride are past historic homes; this is a pretty ride but requires many turns and keeping a careful eye on the map while trying to ride (or stopping at the end of each block to determine a route). The remainder of the "ramble" we rode in fairly consistent traffic of a moderate degree. Most drivers were courteous but the amount of traffic denied us a feeling of escaping to the countryside. Overall, this is a slightly odd "ramble," where the initial parts would be good for very leisurely riders looking around town but the middle and end parts we would recommend only for road riders intending to keep up a decent pace. Note that most of this is obvious from a careful look at the description in the trail guide; I comment here only to explain the lower score and to call others' attention to the details.
