The North Fork of the French Broad heads up on the eastern edge of the Nantahala National Forest. The stream originates in the vicinity of Devil’s Courthouse, off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its protected watershed ensures excellent water quality. High in the mountains it tumbles over Courthouse Falls, a stunning 50-foot drop. Below the falls it remains a steep mountain rivulet for some miles before entering the flat valley at Balsam Grove. Downstream of Balsam Grove there are several beautiful falls—most notably Birdtown Falls, a runnable 20-footer. Flatwater follows Birdtown Falls down to the section described. The North Fork drains a small area, so extended rainfall is necessary for one to paddle it.
