William B. Umstead State Park: Sal’s Branch Trail Professional Review and Guide
"William B. Umstead State Park is a forested oasis tightly nestled among the urban cities of Raleigh, Cary, Durham, and the Research Triangle Park. The park is divided into two sections: Crabtree Creek in the north and Reedy Creek in the south. This trail starts at the visitor-center parking lot, in the Crabtree Creek section of the park. You follow a spur trail to the Sal’s Branch Trail and traverse a few small hills before reaching the southern edge of Big Lake. From here the trail follows the eastern shore of the lake, offering nice views of the lake to the left. Keeping the lake to your left and continuing straight on Sal’s Branch Trail, you climb over a steep hill and then descend to the visitor center, where you started."
