Just 6 miles north of downtown Raleigh and just outside the suburb of Brookhaven, the 53-acre Shelley Lake Park has more than 2 miles of paved trails that circle the forested lakeshore, making it an excellent escape from the city for a quick run or leisurely walk in a serene setting. This route starts to the east of the lake at Optimist Park and follows the paved Snelling Branch Trail through a forested corridor to the Shelley Lake Trail. You circle Shelley Lake through quiet woods, with exceptional views of the lake and plenty of opportunities to encounter the resident waterfowl and wildlife. Along the way you’ll pass workout stations, a playground area, three sports fields, and the Sertoma Art Center.
