Raven Rock State Park: Raven Rock Loop Professional Review and Guide
"Th is route in the southeast section of the park follows the Raven Rock Loop Trail and leads to the namesake Raven Rock, an impressive crystalline rock formation that reaches up to 150 feet high and stretches more than a mile down the Cape Fear River. Th e trail begins at the parking lot at the end of Raven Rock Road and travels through oak, pine, and hickory upland forest. Closer to the Cape Fear River the trail winds through a fl oodplain forest of sycamore, beech, and birch trees. Th e path then arrives at an overlook that off ers spectacular views of the steep rhododendron- and mountain laurel–covered bluff s that comprise the riverbanks below. Th e route follows the crest of these bluff s alongside the Cape Fear River and descends a series of wooden steps to the Raven Rock formation. Before circling back around to the parking lot, you can extend the hike by exploring the American Beech Trail through a large and impressive beech grove."
