Crabtree Creek

Crabtree Creek Professional Review and Guide

"Crabtree Creek’s headwaters include Crabtree Creek west of Cary and several creeks starting east of Research Triangle Park. They flow into Lake Crabtree, a 520-acre flood-control lake in Cary. Downstream, the creek passes through William B. Umstead State Park. It flows on to Raleigh’s Crabtree Valley, a prime example of unwise development in a floodplain. Before the 1970s, the valley was almost empty, but the state’s largest shopping mall was soon to be built here.

From Crabtree Valley, the creek continues through Raleigh’s residential and business development before joining the Neuse River in southeastern Raleigh. A Raleigh Parks and Recreation hiking and biking greenway runs along Crabtree Creek for most of paddling Sections 2–3 and part of Section 4 described below. This eTrail contains 4 sections of Crabtree Creek from Old Reedy Creek Road (Wake Co. 1795) bridge to Poole Road (Wake Co. 1007) access on Neuse River."

Section 1 Update: During a trip in August 2004 with the gauge Crabtree Creek at Ebenezer Church Road reading 100 cfs (4.5 feet), the rapid at Old Company Milldam was difficult to run without hitting rocks. A better flow would be 130 cfs (4.7 feet). There are many trees down in this section, but most could be paddled under or over. At 100 cfs, there were about 8 trees to lift over. Allow extra time for this trip. Lower flow will probably require more portages. Section 2 Update: Fifty feet downstream of the US 70 bridge, a greenway bridge crosses the creek. The bottom of the greenway bridge is only about 5 feet above the water when the USGS Crabtree Creek at Hwy 70 gauge is 100 cfs (5.4 feet). As flow increases, this bridge will become a hazard. Sections 2–3 Update: Old Lassiter Mill Road is now sign posted Lassiter Falls Circle. It leads from Lassiter Mill Road to Lassiter Milldam and the small park managed by Raleigh Parks and Recreation.
