Fore!: Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen Professional Review and Guide
"The “Golf Capital of the World” is a little more than an hour’s drive from the Raleigh-Durham area. A straight shot south, Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen provide duffers with action aplenty. The area has more than forty-three championship courses—720 holes. That translates to fewer than one hundred residents per golf hole, making it one of the highest-density golf areas in the country.
There are, in fact, more than 165 miles of fairways, and more are scheduled to open soon. The region is home to five past Olympic equestrian champions, and Olympic bicycle teams have trained here. If you like to spin, you’ll find plenty of quiet roads to roll on. Speaking of quiet, one of the state’s best-kept secrets is the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines. Weymouth’s Writers-in-Residence program offers writers and composers stays of up to two weeks to pursue their work."
