The Yadkin heads up into the mountain resort town of Blowing Rock and flows through a remote mountainous area of Caldwell County before running alongside US 321 about 3 miles north of Patterson. It moves generally northeastward through Happy Valley into Kerr Scott Lake, and then meanders through five counties before entering the impoundment at High Rock Lake in Davidson County. Two additional impoundments, Badin and Tillery, follow immediately; after this the Yadkin becomes the Pee Dee and flows into South Carolina. The river is primarily pastoral down from Patterson, moving over occasional low ledges and through shallow rock gardens. Below Kerr Scott Dam it continues on much the same, although it is considerably wider and has fewer rapids, until it makes the big bend to the south below Siloam. Here, it drops fairly fast for a couple of miles over a series of shoals, which can become formidable in medium-high waters.
