The Buffalo flows from the junction of several small streams in Buffalo Cove. It courses through a small valley until it cuts through a deep remote gorge. After leaving the gorge it comes back along the highway before leveling out slightly as it confluences with the Yadkin. Throughout its course, the Buffalo is a small, low-water stream flowing over gravel bars with a few small ledges.
