Hammock Hills Nature Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Rolling-hill topography, stunted trees, and stunning views of the marshland are all found along this delightful loop trail. Interpretive signs offer insight into the flora and fauna of this maritime forest as you hike over a diverse range of terrain. The trail itself, and its close proximity to the charming village of Ocracoke, lands this one on the Author’s Favorites List.
Reached only by ferry, Ocracoke Island sits well out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean at the southern end of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The island packs a punch, and the charming village of Ocracoke has a Key West feel to it. The village is home to a British cemetery, the Ocracoke Lighthouse, and Springer’s Point Preserve, where the pirate Blackbeard met his demise. As you travel up the island, you’ll notice “ramps” where you can access the beach to drive on if you have four-wheel drive. Permits are required and can be obtained at the National Park Service visitor’s center near the village ferry port."
