Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Howell Woods is a field learning center for Johnston Community College. It’s located on a 2800-acre tract where the Neuse River transitions from the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain. Up to now, the river has had focus, direction, its course determined by the rolling hills of the Piedmont. But when it reaches Interstate 95, the land suddenly flattens.
The Neuse finds itself with room to roam, going from a floodplain just a few hundred feet wide to one 3 or 4 miles across. A good rain can change the river’s course in an instant, breaking through oxbows, turning them into lakes, and creating new oxbows. This wild area is known as the Letlones, an area where loblolly pines buddy up to pond and bald cypress, where duckweed blankets ponds, and where lush bottomland forests dominate."
