Northern Nantahala Traverse Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This hike takes you over Wayah and Wesser Balds, where spectacular views are afforded from old fire tower platforms. From these two lookouts, you can see many major peaks of the Great Smokies, other peaks south into the Nantahalas of North Carolina, and some of the mountains of Georgia. There is also a tremendous view from Jump-Up on the long descent into the Nantahala Gorge.
The hike can be cut short by 4 miles by driving the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) road to the top of Wayah Bald at the start of the hike. You will forgo the long, slow climb up from Wayah Gap but may also miss a profusion of flame azaleas, rhododendrons, mountain laurel, and other seasonal wildflowers in mid-to late June."
