Hanging Dog Campground Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"When people think of Sm oky Mountain country, they picture rolling mountains, deep forests, and rushing streams. That’s what comes naturally. However, when early settlers came here, they started the unnatural job of building dams. The hilly terrain of the Southern Appalachians proved to be fertile ground for creating lakes.
Later, the Tennessee Valley Authority dammed waters on a grand scale. Now we have an abundance of scenic lakes that seemingly have mountains growing right out of them. Much of the land around these lakes is owned by you and me, courtesy of the U.S. Forest Service. Along some lakes, the Forest Service has built campgrounds that enable us to enjoy some of these bodies of water. Hanging Dog Campground is just such a place."
