On this day trip, you’re headed to Mayberry. The fictional TV town was fashioned after Mount Airy for The Andy Griffith Show. Griffith grew up in a small home here, and although the actor now lives in Manteo, on the coast, it is here in Mount Airy that you will find the world’s largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia. Other well-known celebrities, including country music singer Donna Fargo and bluegrass legend Tommy Jarrell, are natives of Mount Airy. The original Siamese twins, Eng and Chang Bunker, lived in the nearby White Plains community. You’ll learn more about them at the Mount Airy Visitors Center. Be sure to stop at Pilot Mountain, which Andy referred to as “Mount Pilot” in numerous episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. Take a hike to the top of this landmark for gorgeous views of the Piedmont, and to your west, the Blue Ridge Mountains. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Raleigh-Durham. Each Day Trip includes, destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
