Hanging Rock: Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock Professional Review and Guide
"A 24-mile paved road between two prominent remnants of the ancient Sauratown Mountains, often called “the mountains away from the mountains” because of their isolation from the Blue Ridge. This drive connects two prominent Piedmont mountains, Pilot Mountain and Hanging Rock. These two peaks are remnants of the ancient Sauratown Mountains, which rose in this area many millions of years ago.
The ancient mountains have eroded steadily over time, and only a few peaks of durable quartzite remain. Isolated, remnant peaks such as these are known as monadnocks. Special attractions: Hanging Rock State Park, Pilot Mountain State Park, hiking, rock climbing, equestrian trails, fishing, swimming, boating, scenic views, fall colors, and waterfalls. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
