Sals Branch Trail — William B.Umstead State Park Professional Review and Guide
"A wilderness-like oasis among some of the state’s busiest urban areas, the 5579-acre park named for a conservation-minded governor offers a great place for trail running, fishing, picnicking, boating, biking, and, of course, hiking with your dog. The Sals Branch Trail is the perfect distance and distraction after work, on a weekend, or for a quick getaway any day during the week.
Since mountain bikes are not allowed on this trail, it is also a great path for dogs. The many hardwood trees make autumn a cool and colorful time to hike. The low elevation of Raleigh and the moderate climate also allow for hiking throughout winter. Although leaves provide shade in summer, the hot months can be a little muggy and buggy for dogs."
