South Mountains State Park Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"During my roaming while writing this book, park rangers and others kept mentioning South Mountains State Park as an ideal candidate for inclusion here. By the time I got to the park, my expectations were as high as an Appalachian peak. And my trip here was as satisfying as a view from such a high place. South Mountains State Park delivers in both its small, rustic streamside campground and its 18,000 acres of wilderness to explore.
This is a wilderness park—nothing but you and nature. After you set up camp, your exploration can be a day trip by foot or mountain bike, or a backpack for those inclined to overnight in the backcountry. Many visitors mix up a trip, first camping in the campground, then setting off into the backcountry. The park’s amenities have been carefully integrated into the South Mountains, an outlier range far from the more-popular peaks straddling the North Carolina–Tennessee border."
