Okay, so the drive to the “Crystal Coast” may be a stretch for an eTrail that purports to highlight destinations within two hours of Raleigh-Durham. Sure, it will take you an additional half hour to make the Atlantic coast, 147 miles from Raleigh, but for the extra effort, you’ll be rewarded with a quaint downtown, beautiful beaches, and coastal charm. Today, you cross a high-rise bridge then pitch camp in one of the many fine properties along the coast. You’ll be joining the 3,000 residents who live here year-round and the 35,000 visitors who come here during the summer months. For the kids—or the young at heart—the town center has amusement park rides. Head back to Raleigh through Swansboro, a quaint fishing village 23 miles south of Morehead City, or take the scenic drive down Emerald Isle. Either way, the trip back to Raleigh from Swansboro is 135 miles. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Raleigh-Durham. Each Day Trip includes, destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
