Lake Norman

Lake Norman Professional Review and Guide

"Short Take: 32,500 acres; large tributary creeks with points and coves, boat docks, underwater ridges, good upriver cover with current. If the bass fishermen on Lake Norman seem to fish faster than usual, don’t be alarmed. It’s simply because they’re accustomed to going fast—many drivers and crew members from the NASCAR auto racing circuits have homes around the lake, and more than a few of them enjoy bass fishing.

The largest of 10 lakes along the Catawba River, Lake Norman is administered to and controlled by Duke Power Company. Because the water is used to produce electricity for much of North Carolina, the lake level fluctuates frequently. During the winter months, the lake may be drawn down eight to 10 feet. “It really is an amazing lake, to produce such good fishing and to be so close to a large metropolitan area,” notes professional angler Guy Eaker, who has fished Lake Norman for more than 25 years. “It offers a lot of different types of water and cover and has been a good training lake for a number of tournament anglers over the years.” Primary Species: Largemouth and striped bass."
