The North Fork has its headwaters on Humpback Mountain below the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a small shallow stream that US 221 follows down the mountain until Armstrong Creek comes in and it picks up considerably. Also, in the Sevier area, it receives some degree of industrial pollution. Below Sevier it enters a small gorge and continues on its way to Lake James. The river runs parallel to and below the western ridge of the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area. With the exception of the Clinchfield Railroad, running along the east bank until about halfway down, this is an uninhabited area. It remains fairly narrow as it courses over ledges and through small boulder gardens.
