The First Broad rises on the slopes of South Mountain and flows eastward through Golden Valley below the South Mountain range before cutting south through central Cleveland County and joining the Broad River below Shelby. The upper stretches meander through the foothills, many of which are filled with mountain laurel and rhododendron. There are no difficulties. Paddlers will encounter pebble fields with occasional ledges. The stretch below CR 1734, which is filled with laurel and rhododendron, is particularly scenic.
