I have visited this refuge numerous times and have enjoyed each trip. Have seen all kinds of birds (turkeys, swans, owls, blue herons, egrets, etc.), as well as numerous black bears and deer. Wildlife sightings tend to vary by the time of year. Summer time yields many bear and deer sightings along Milltail Road in the evening times (look in the crop fields). Winter time yields less mammal sightings, but instead a wide assortment of birds (many neotropical species that you generally find further south, as well as many northern species). Great place to visit at any time of the year and very convenient location from the Nags Head area.

Nice sanctuary for Birding...drizzly weather limited the number of birds that we were able to see, however, the driving made t easy to cover a lot of ground and revealed this as a great place to come back to another time when weather and schedules ae more condusive to giving this refuge the time it deserves.
