Raven Rock State Park — Campbell Creek Loop Trail

Raven Rock State Park — Campbell Creek Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Raven Rock State Park is best known for its namesake rock face, a massive bluff that towers 150 feet above the Cape Fear River. You won’t be going there, though, because that’s where everyone who visits the park goes—it’s the Space Mountain of this magic kingdom. You’ll be heading down Campbell Creek Loop Trail, which captures the best of the rest of the park. Including the solitude."

This is a wonderful park and this trail is only one of many. The trail follows a creek that emptys into a river. The terrain is varied and the trail is well marked. Its a moderate terrain. We'd love to go back and visit the other trails.
I was looking for a place to break in some new boots, get the family out doors, and introduce my 6 year old son to a little hiking. We went on the 2+ mile loop down to Raven Rock and back. We really enjoyed the afternoon. The facilities have been recently upgraded with some Federal Recovery funds so the facilities are top notch (new buildings, parking lots, picnic area). The hike was really easy going for the most part with a gentle grade down to the river following a small picturesque stream and ending with some fairly steep stairs wrapping next to a waterfall (dry unfortunately on my trip) down to the river bank where the large cliff rocks are located giving the park its name sake. The trail was in really good shape outside a good bit of mud next to the river area (not unexpected we've had some rains). Not at all challenging from a hiking standpoint but very family friendly and very enjoyable none the less. Next trip I plan on doing the outer loop that has an overlook and is 5+ miles and possibly trying out the campgrounds to break in some new gear. It was a very nice day so the trail was fairly busy but not overly crowded but I'm hoping the longer loop is a bit less busy. Would absolutely recommend this trail to others especially if you're looking for an easy hike with the family but more nature then your typical community park.
Great park for hiking- there are a few trails. Overlooks the Cape Fear River. Some climbing up and down stairs. Had a great time hiking here.
