Cataloochee Ski Area

Cataloochee Ski Area Professional Review and Guide

"North Carolina’s oldest ski area began operating in 1961 when Cataloochee Ranch owner Tom Alexander converted his isolated, mile-high pasture-land peak into a small alpine facility on Moody Top Mountain. Alexander developed the mountain into a ski area to further the region’s tourism trade and to keep his ranch hands employed through the winter months.

Cataloochee sits in western Carolina’s Maggie Valley, 35 miles west of Asheville, with part of the resort property bordering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This eTrail contains a thorough description of the resort including driving directions, mountain statistics, trail profiles, extensive lodging & dining information, travel tips, and much more."

I was there and skied when it had just started with T-BAR and rope tow lifts. they did not need much snow because the pasture grass was soft without rocks, but they made snow. when we had natural snow the big pasture on the new mnt was superb when we could ski in virgin snow.
