Linville Area Professional Review and Guide

"This short and popular Blue Ridge Parkway leg-stretcher offers spectacular views of a nearly vertical-mile drop to the Piedmont. An option to start on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail helps hikers find solitude. Descriptions of the following trails are included: Beacon Heights Trail and the Flat Rock Self-Guiding Loop Trail.

From the trailhead (4,220 feet) walk across the state road that parallels the Parkway (SR 1513) and enter the woods where the sign says “Tanawha Trail Beacon Heights 0.2.” At the next junction, the Tanawha Trail departs to the left. The Mountains- to-Sea Trail comes in from the right and goes left with the Tanawha Trail. Turn right on the Mountains- to- Sea Trail—that’s also the Beacon Heights Trail to the top. Past
an overhanging rain-shelter rock on the left, there’s a bench on the right before the steepest, rockiest part of the trail."
