Grandfather Mountain Cruise Professional Review and Guide
"Grandfather Mountain may be the most recognizable peak in western North Carolina. The cruise is a thrill-a-minute bicycle loop. In 18 miles you wind around switchbacks on a segment of the mountain's base on Highway 221, then ascend the mountain's side on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
In the final miles, you cross the Linn Cove Viaduct, the engineering masterpiece that completed the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1989. Highway 221 remains memorable not only for its beauty, but for the farmers who sell their apple cider, apple butter, apples, honey, and molasses at roadside stands. Terrain: rolling to mountainous. Hwy. 221, with its quick descents on sharp curves, requires competent bike-handling skills. The segment along the parkway is a gradual climb to the Linn Cove Viaduct."
