Before October 27, 1986, the Horsepasture River was in danger because a power company was planning to build a hydroelectric dam that would terminate the water flow to the falls. But Friends of the Horsepasture River, with the help of legislators and state organizations, won its fight to block the project. A section of river 4.5 miles long was designated Wild and Scenic to be protected by the federal government.
