Kings Mountain Ramble

Kings Mountain Ramble Professional Review and Guide

"Kings Mountain Ramble connects two state parks and a national military park on a pleasant but hilly ride from southern North Carolina into northern South Carolina.

From Crowders Mountain State Park in Gaston County, North Carolina, the route dips and rises through forests and farm country before it crosses the South Carolina line. Just over the line you enter Kings Mountain State Park and travel through that park to the Kings Mountain National Military Park, which is adjacent. There are limited sources of food on this route, so it’s recommended that you carry provisions with you."

I am going to take the opposite end of the review as the prior post and say that this ride was sheer delight. Probably not for your children but if you cycle much at all, on a road bike this ride is heaven. The best thing about this ride is that traffic is minimal and the scenery is great. I started from Kings Mountain and did it opposite of the way the guide shows. Doing this allows for a much more relaxed startup and keeps traffic to the bare minimum because the first several miles are within Kings Mtn State Park. The entire ride is gently rolling hills. On 90% of them you can gain enough speed in your descents to climb most of the subsequent hills. Very little traffic. The bonus is that you have not one but two state parks to check out, camping in both parks if you want, rock climbing in Crowders if you want and a National Park at Kings Mtn with lots of history. I was traveling the day I rode it and needed something close to I-85 and on my way and this hidden jewel was perfect for clearing my mind and jolting my soul. An excellent hidden jewel.
This trail was fun but extremely hilly. We brought our 2 boys and while they were able to complete the trip, it was very difficult. These are long country rolling hills and I had no idea by the description of this trail that it that challenging. We were on mountain bikes though! I would never have know about this route had it not been for this site though.
