Mount Jefferson State Natural Area Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"A scenic motor road comes close to reaching Mount Jefferson’s almost 5,000-foot summit. The drive to the park’s upper parking area is worth the trip even if you don’t hike, with impressive vistas at 2.2 miles (Sunset Overlook) and 3.2 miles (Jefferson Overlook). Scattered below are the pastoral farms of a county known for the state’s only cheese factory and the New River, a National Wild and Scenic River, with canoe routes through nearby New River State Park.
Like so many others in North Carolina’s park system, 541-acre Mount Jefferson State Natural Area was proposed and secured for park status by citizens raising their own funds. Picnicking and hiking are the park’s primary recreational activities. The picnic area is located in a beautiful summit forest an easy stroll from the upper parking area. It has nineteen sites with water, restrooms, a picnic shelter, and grills."
