Much of this hike travels alongside High Point Lake, including the peninsula where the Raccoon Run Trail loops. The Lakeshore Trail intersects the other seven paths here, together forming a network that offers myriad environments to explore. Also, the Piedmont Environmental Center is a destination in its own right. Give yourself time to look and learn, even timing your visit with a naturalist program. Piedmont Environmental Education Center is more than just a nature preserve with hiking trails. It also is a learning and demonstration center, even down to the construction of the primary building, which uses all sorts of recycled materials as well as solar energy. The center occupies nearly 400 acres of land along High Point Lake and operates a 7,000-square-foot environmental education building. Naturalists are on hand to lead the year-round programs. A big draw is the North Carolina mapscape—a 30- by 70-foot topographical relief map, complete with running rivers that is worth a visit in and of itself. Enjoy this and a stellar shoreline hike in hilly wooded terrain.
