From the Max Patch parking lot it's a quick and easy hike up to the bald. The view from Max Patch really cannot be beat-- it offers 365 degree views of the mountains in all directions, including all the way into Smokey Mountain National Park. To get a few more miles in, walk the nearly 3-mile loop that starts at the top of the bald. Like another hiker mentioned already, Max Patch really must be experienced at sunset. Bring a blanket or a few compact camping chairs and spend a few hours atop the bald, watching the stars come out. It's also possible to camp at the top of Max Patch-- there are designated camping spots. On your way home, stop in the trail town of Hot Springs and grab a meal. It's really the best way to spend the day!

Max Patch is an easy trail, more of a stroll really. It must be seen at sunset. We arrived right after a rain storm and were greeted by a rainbow to the east and a gorgeous sunset to the west.

Max Patch is always a wonderful hike and the views are hard to beat. You have an unobstructed view in all directions and the stars are amazing at night. I hiked from Max Patch to Lemon Gap and back (about 12 miles) and finished the hike in the dark (which is always fun.) I'd recommend this hike and recommend backpacking. There are some sites at both ends of the trail.
