Off The Beaten Track Volume I: A Guide to Mountain Biking in Western North Carolina - The Smokies
by Jim Parham (Milestone Press)
The climb to the top of the bald gets progressively more difficult as you go up. In fact, it's downright hard to ride the last several hundred yards. You'll find a tower at the top and a great view. With a little work to the abandoned Wauchecha Bald Trail, this ride could become a much longer loop ride. Stay off the tower and enjoy the easy coast back to the bottom.
Mountain Bike! The Southern Appalachian & Smoky Mountains
by Steve Jones (Menasha Ridge Press)
This out-and-back starts out easily enough behind the normally closed gate for FS 438, a lightly graveled dirt base. It's almost a full four-mile climb to the top, making an eight-mile total ride. The moderate grade starting at the trailhead switches dramatically after crossing the creek, just after passing 438A on the right.
Before you reach the top, it will become a difficult ride both physically and technically. The last section up to Wauchecha Bald is covered by a high, dense network of interlocked boughs high overhead. The view from Wauchecha Bald is incredible. and the ride back down is a thrill at any speed.
