Frisco Woods

Frisco Woods Professional Review and Guide

"Frisco is a small community located between Buxton and Hatteras Village. Originally known as Trent, it is wooded on the sound side and has several large sand dunes on its ocean side. The area surrounding the Frisco Native American Museum is thought to be the site of an extensive Indian village, possibly where the lost colonists escaped to when they left Roanoke Island. The museum houses an amazing collection of Native American artifacts from around the country. The maritime forest extends right to the sound here, creating some stunning vistas from the water, but it’s the sand dunes that are the big attraction.

On the ocean side, the road that leads to the Billy Mitchell Airport ends at the National Park Service Campground; it is well worth taking the time off the water to wander around the hills. The beach here is a protected bay south of Cape Point and may have calmer waters than the beaches that face northwest above Cape Point. Because of the Gulf Stream, the water here can be as much as fifteen to twenty degrees warmer during the winter months."
