"Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center is owned and operated by Johnston Community College. The 2,856-acre property is actively managed for the benefit of wildlife, educational opportunities, and low-impact outdoor recreation. The Howell Woods property contains a great diversity of habitats and wildlife within the 2,800 acres situated between the Neuse River and Hannah and Mill Creeks. The dominant community is over 1,600 acres of bottomland hardwood forest. There are more than 25 miles of unpaved roads and trails on the property.
Habitats: Bottomland hardwood, mixed pine-hardwood, loblolly pine, longleaf pine, and pine and scrub oak sandhill forests; cypress-gum swamp; managed fallow fields. Key birds: Summer: Mississippi Kite; American Redstart; Hooded, Prothonotary, Kentucky, and Swainson’s Warbler; Summer Tanager; Indigo Bunting. Winter: Baltimore Oriole. Year-round: Red-headed Woodpecker; Loggerhead Shrike; Brown-headed Nuthatch."
