The Stony Fork runs off the slopes of Tompkins Knob, off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and winds its way between Dividing Ridge and Elk Ridge before confluencing with the Yadkin River above Kerr Scott Reservoir. It is a small, fast-moving stream, dropping over many small ledges. It might be worth noting that it was in this area, between the Stony Fork and Elk Creek, that Tom Dooley of “Hang Down Your Head” fame supposedly did his dastardly deed.
